From the President- News Alert !!!

Beginning in the 2008-2009 school year, if a local unit's 501(c)(3) non-profit status or charter is revoked by either Alabama PTA or IRS this local unit must pay a re-instatement or application fee (which currently is $750.00) directly to the IRS.

Once this occurs, it is my understanding we (Alabama PTA) cannot re-file for this local unit under our non-profit umbrella. Therefore it is vital that every local unit remits membership dues by the March 1st deadline. Failure to submit will label the unit not in good standing with Alabama PTA therefore we are required by law to report these local units to IRS for removal of their non profit status under the umbrella of Alabama PTA.

Secondly, if a local unit fails to file a 990 or 990EZ for 3 consecutive years the IRS has declared they will revoke the non-profit status of this PTA, once again requiring an application fee for re-instatement.

For more information concerning the filing of 990s, visit www.irs.org.

Sincerely,
Laurie McCaulley
President, Alabama PTA
